On Risks

Good day dear humans!

We want to say a little bit about taking risks today.

Many people are what they might call risk-averse. Many people are what they might call daring. But however you identify, we say look carefully at what you are doing and you will see that everyone is both of these, each day.

It is a risk to get out of bed, also a risk to stay in bed. If you get up, anything could happen in your day. You might make mistakes. You might have success. You might trip and stumble. You might have your best hair day yet. Someone you love might die today. It could even be you.

Staying in bed brings with it similar possibilities. You might finally get some rest. You might miss something fantastic out there in the world. You might not get wet if it rains. You might soil the bed if you don’t get up at all. You might have a stroke of genius, having taken time to relax. You might spend the day in the grip of anxiety, not freeing it from your body through movement and space. People die in bed, too.

What we are saying is that everything is a bold adventure and everything has risk. Everything has the potential to be boring as heck. No matter what you do, life is full of incalculable possibilities, and here is the thing: nothing ever turns out as you think. Ever. There will always be surprises, plot twists, accidents of nature and of fate. If only you hadn’t left the house five minutes early or late, you would not have been in that accident or met the love of your life.

It is all a big crapshoot, as they say, so what are you waiting for? Mistakes will be made, synchronicity will occur, love will fade, joy will flourish, something unusual will pop up in the most unexpected places. Will it be a volunteer plant in your garden, a flower or vegetable you will be glad to see? Or will it be a tumor, taking you on a journey to fight for your life? And how will you choose to move forward on days like this?

All you can really do is make choices. But not the ones you suppose. You can choose to face your experience or you can try to hide (both are a valid response). You can choose the big picture or the minutiae. You can choose to go right or left, some of the time, or backwards or forwards or halt. But everything is moving, with or without your permission, so you don’t get to control it by your will. What you do receive is possibility and the capacity to say to yourself: OK, this is not what I want, but I can handle it. Or: WOW, that went better than I thought! Or: Hey, let’s see what we can make of this (like the semi-random tiles of your turn in the game of Scrabble). (Think about it, that game. What a good name for it. What a metaphor.)

All of this is in aid of simply pointing out that you are not in control. Whatever you are aiming for, it has the element of surprise, with everything else. That is no reason not to try. Also no reason to keep going in some direction you decided on back then. You may have destiny, you may have free will, and so does everyone else, and the earth keeps turning in space. So, knowing this, what do you choose?
